Malawi is a founding member of SADC, having joined the regional organization at its formation as the Southern African Development Coordination Conference in 1980. It contributes to SADC’s objectives of regional integration, economic development, trade, peace and security, agriculture, tourism and infrastructure development.

Malawi also participates in the SADC Free Trade Area and regional initiatives aimed at reducing trade barriers and strengthening economic cooperation among member states.
